Revisiting the conceptualization of “Turks” in Bulgaria

The information presented in this paper is based on repeated ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Bulgaria between 2008 and 2011. The aim of this study is to highlight the conceptual field of the ‘minority’ category and, in particular, of the construction of a ‘problematic minority’ in Bulgarian public discourse. First, the article focuses on the broad context of the concept of minority in Bulgaria illustrated by stereotypical statements of the Prime Minister Boyko Borissov. Next, the construction of a ‘problematic minorities’ category will be examined. We closely observe the stereotypes linked to the image of ‘Turks’, with particular attention to their presence in everyday speech.
