My work is dedicated to a unique Native American coat with quillwork decoration. It has been kept in the City Museum of Braunschweig in Germany since 1899. This rare artifact is part of an important collection of North American artifacts from before 1783. It is often attributed to the Huron people, but the unique tailoring and the mix of different decorative elements found in various native cultures suggest that it actually comes from the West. This makes the considered sample one of the most interesting and mysterious exhibits in the collection. This study tries to explain where this strange ancient artifact came from. It also looks at the history of this type of clothing in the material culture of the native peoples of the Northeastern Plains.
