The purpose of this work is to gather and, if possible, analyze scattered information about Native American hide painting found in chronicles, reports, diaries, and memoirs of European explorers and travelers from the 16th to 18th centuries. The accounts presented below provide important evidence of this form of native art in the cultures of many North American tribes since ancient times. These largely little-known sources deserve special attention because they offer insight into hide painting during the early historical period and allow us to assess its level of development.
