Obesity among Ahom Women: an evaluation using Fat Mass Index, Percentage of Body Fat and Body Mass Index

Obesity is an increasing public health concern across various populations in India, including indigenous communities. This study aims to assess the prevalence of obesity among Ahom women using Fat Mass Index (FMI), Percentage of Body Fat (%BF), and Body Mass Index (BMI), and to explore the associated socio-demographic factors. This community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 410 Ahom women from selected rural and urban areas of Assam. Anthropometric data, including height and weight, were collected using standard procedures. Fat Mass, Fat-Free Mass, FMI, %BF, and BMI were calculated and categorised based on established cut-offs. Socio-demographic variables such as age, education, income, marital history, and residence were also recorded and analysed in relation to obesity status. The mean FMI, %BF, and BMI were 8.37 kg/m², 29.36%, and 24.08 kg/m², respectively. Obesity prevalence varied widely across indices: 10.25% by BMI, 22.68% by %BF, and 28.78% by FMI. Higher obesity rates were observed among older women, urban residents, those with higher education and income levels, and women with early marriages and multiple childbirths. BMI significantly underestimated adiposity compared to %BF and FMI. The study reveals that BMI alone is insufficient for accurately detecting obesity among Ahom women. Body composition measures such as FMI and %BF provide better insights into adiposity.
