Correlates of Human Development: Health, Hygiene, Nutrition, Education, and Income in Kolkata, West Bengal

Human development is a multidimensional concept that extends beyond economic growth and, thereby, improvements in quality of life for individual well-being. Among the most critical correlates of human development are health, hygiene, nutrition, education, and income – each contributing significantly to enhancing human capabilities and opportunities. Health forms the foundation of human development, ensuring physical well-being and longevity, while hygiene practices play a preventive role in reducing disease burden and improving public health outcomes. Adequate nutrition is closely linked to cognitive development and productivity. Education acts as a catalyst, empowering individuals with knowledge and skills, fostering awareness about health, hygiene, and nutrition, and enabling access to better income opportunities. Income, in turn, supports improved living conditions, healthcare access, educational attainment, and food security, creating a reinforcing cycle of development. The present research aims to identify the various reasons why the Indian Labour Organisation does not recognize their labor as a class. Based on fieldwork and case studies in the slum area of Harichand Pally, Kestopur, Kolkata, my attempt will be to develop strategies for policy enhancement and the development of these women domestic workers. My work may help in creating a healthy and immaculate society.
