Prevalence and Patterns of Smoking Behaviour among Adults in Sagar District, Madhya Pradesh, India

Smoking remains a significant public health concern in India, with notable regional variations. This study assessed the prevalence and patterns of smoking behavior among adults in Sagar District, Madhya Pradesh. A community-based cross-sectional design was used, and data were collected from 390 respondents through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistical methods were applied for analysis. The results showed an overall smoking prevalence of 43.1%, with higher rates among males and those aged 27–35 years. Bidi smoking was the most common form, and most smokers were daily users. Most respondents began smoking in early adulthood, and a substantial proportion reported long-term smoking. The study highlights a high burden of smoking and distinct behavioral patterns, indicating the need for targeted public health interventions focused on prevention and cessation.
